Spanish Immersion Assistant, Kathy Nguyen

An interview with Señorita Kathy

Who are you and where are you from? My name is Señorita Kathy. I was born and raised in Renton, Washington.

Who are your family members? My family includes mom, my dad, and my little sister, two grandparents, many aunts and uncles, and many cousins.

What are your hobbies, interests, dislikes? I love singing and playing the guitar, drawing/crafts, working with children, languages, being with nature (taking walks/hiking), rock climbing, yoga, traveling and exploring, Disney, creativity, and imagination. I dislike injustice in the world, but love talking about it to stay educated and to think of ideas to make it better.

What would you like our community to know about you? Besides playing music and teaching, the one thing that makes me overwhelmingly happy is learning about the world. I studied abroad in Argentina in 2011 and lived in Spain last year. Both experiences were inexplicably incredible.

Can you share a favorite or memorable elementary school moment from your past? Or a funny story about yourself? One of my favorite memories from teaching was when my family was planning a trip to come visit me when I was teaching English in Spain. Books in English over there were really expensive. Without my students knowledge my family helped gather English books from families, neighbors, stores and my own collection to haul to this little village in Granada. When we told them that we had a surprise for them and as we pulled out the stack of books with English titles the kids all gasped and jumped out of their seats from being so excited!

What are your hopes for the future? I am currently applying for graduate schools for a Masters in Teaching! I want to continue working with language and schools more involved with global action.

Teacher Testimonial: Profe MaryLynn Powers

One teacher for a group of 25 and 27 high energy 6-7 year olds is hard enough. Add to that instruction in a language that they don’t speak, and things get even more difficult! That’s why IA’s are great! Srta. Kathy is able to work with students one on one and in small groups to help reach our 1st grade standards. She can talk with students who are having a hard time following directions or disrupting the class. She is supportive in preparation for activities: preparing computers and materials for center and whole group activities. She makes sure everything is ready to go so teaching can go smoothly. First graders have so many stories to tell and things to share. There is never enough time for me alone to hear everything that is on their hearts and minds. Srta. Kathy is another caring adult in the classroom, at recess and at lunch who can validate the students’ feelings and give them the opportunity to share what they need to share. Then they can keep working!
