Getting prepped for SBA - May 6, 2019

Dear McDonald International Student and Families,

Since returning from Spring Break the students and staff have been working very hard to prepare for our end of year state assessments. Over the next four weeks students in grades 3-5 will take the end-of-year Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in English Language Arts and Math. Additionally, 5th grade students will take the end-of-year Washington State Science assessment. Please make sure you know when your child is participating in these state assessments and do your best to avoid doctors appointments and vacations during this time period. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The annual window for families to refer students for testing to determine eligibility for Highly Capable (HC) services opens May 15-September 23, 2019. If you have questions about this, ask your child’s classroom teachers and check out the Advanced Learning webpage on the Seattle Public Schools website.

McFestival is just around the corner. Come one, come all to the first annual McFestival! ALL K–5TH GRADE STUDENTS at McDonald International will be performing in this spring music concert/art show extravaganza. The night is not just music, it is not just art, it is MCFESTIVAL!

WHEN June 7th, 2019 5:30 p.m. TO 8:00 p.m.
CONCERT The music performance will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will be very limited seating available, but you are welcome to bring folding camp chairs or something of the like. ART EXHIBIT Every student will have at least one artwork on display in the school art show! The gallery will be in the covered play court attached to the playground. Highlights will include found object sculptures, collaborative street art and work from our school-wide art activism unit.
FOOD Come hungry, as there will be food trucks from Chicago West and Zaytoona (with vegetarian options)!
VOLUNTEER! We need YOUR help to make this event the very best! If you would like to help set up, tear down, or prepare for the event, or if you know of anyone who would be interested in performing at the event please email Ms. Pollema (akpollema@seattleschools.org) or Ms. Amanda (asrengli@seattleschools.org).
In the last principal newsletter, I introduced you to some of our new staff members and guest teachers/interns for next year. This week I would like to introduce you to an additional guest teacher/intern for next year. Check out her bio below.

Mireia Larriba Miguel, Guest Teacher/Intern

Mireia comes from Barcelona Spain. . She is interested in the Amity intern program because when she was 17 years old, she visited the US and fell in love with the country, the culture, and the customs. She is excited about the opportunity to teach here since she also loves teaching and will be able to teach in a country she loves. Mireia is most looking forward to sharing her language and culture with the students. In June Mireia will graduate from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at mhsushner@seattleschools.org.

Sincerely,

Michelle Goldberg
