End of the Year Announcements - June 15, 2018

Dear McDonald International Student and Families,

Thank you for a fantastic year! On behalf of the entire staff, it is has been a pleasure working with your children. As this school year ends, we wish our fifth graders and their families a wonderful transition to middle school. Please come back and visit us! Additionally, we say good-bye to our wonderful staff members, interns, and long-term subs who will not be returning next year. We will miss you: Miss Grue, Miss Jenny, Hidee Sensei, Maestra Maria, Maestra Mayte, Maestra Morris, Ms. Nancy, Mrs. Oerkvitz, Ms. Simon, Reira, Natsumi, Mayuko, Unai, Carlotta, Irene, and Nelson.

In my last Principal Newsletter, I shared which teachers are teaching each grade level for the 2018-2019 school year. I failed to mention that in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, the Japanese Immersion students and some of the Spanish Immersion students will be mixed together in their English Language Arts (ELA) class. We are excited about this change! This year we mixed students in 5th grade and received lots of positive feedback.

We are still in need of host families for our language immersion interns. If you are interested, please reach out to Erica Lerer by July 1.

In late August, you will receive an email with who your child’s teachers are for the 2018-2019 school year. If you are not sure if the school has your correct email address, please email Jane before the end of the school year.

If you are not going to be returning to McDonald Interntional next year, please email Jane.

Save the Date! Curriculum Night for the 2018-2019 school year will be on Wednesday September 26, 2018 from 6-7:30pm.

I am pleased to share that we have hired our new School Counselor, Keri Kochvar.

Hello! I am a recent graduate from Penn State University's Counselor Education program. I am Pk-12 certified. I have two years of school counseling experience thus far; where I have developed a year-long counseling lesson curriculum and supporting students one-on-one on topics such as family, self-image, and academic issues. I have also co-lead small groups with topics such as coping skills, social skills, and self-regulation. Every day that I am in the elementary school is a day that I am doing what I am passionate about, supporting children.

Lastly, two quick reminders: Wallingford Boys and Girls Club will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. KidsCo will be closed on Friday. And, the last day of school is this Friday. School ends 1 hour early at 1:25pm.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. Please encourage your children to read in English and Japanese or Spanish. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Michelle Goldberg
