School Tours and Open Enrollment - February 1, 2018

Dear McDonald International Families,

This past month we hosted three school tours for prospective parents for the 2018-2019 school year. We had over 225 parents tour our school. They visited various classrooms in grades K to 5 as well as art, music and PE. I heard many positive comments about our school as I talked with them. Many parents were impressed with our immersion and international programs, teachers, and students. I want to thank all the parent volunteers, PTA members, staff, and student tour guides that helped to make these tours a great success.

Next year we will have four Kindergarten classrooms (2 Spanish Immersion and 2 Japanese Immersion). Online registration for students new to Seattle Public Schools is currently open. On Monday, Feb. 5, Open Enrollment begins and School Choice Forms will be available onlineOpen Enrollment will end on February 16.

Current families with incoming Kindergarten Students: you must register your children through the new online registration with SPS and then submit a school choice form by Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 to apply for McDonald International in September 2018. Be sure to indicate on the choice form that your incoming Kindergartener has a sibling already attending McDonald International.

Current McDonald International 5th grade students rising to middle school: If you live within the Hamilton International School boundaries, your child will be automatically assigned to Hamilton. If you live outside the Hamilton International School boundaries, and you want your child to continue with language immersion at Hamilton, you must submit a choice form to SPS February 5-16 for Hamilton. This is an automatic assignment if you apply during the Open Enrollment period.

If you have any questions about enrollment for next school year, please contact the school office.

Part of the reason the program at McDonald International School is so successful is due to the wonderful support of our parent community! Each year McDonald International families have supported the school by providing financial support for our immersion and international programs. Your generosity is so appreciated! The PTA has just begun their Winter Fund Drive. You will be receiving a lot of information about this from the PTA and from your room parents. We appreciate all that you do for our school!

A few reminders:
The school district will notify bus riding families through robocall and email through School Messenger during the bus drivers’ strike. The district will use school and district websites and social media to share information on a regular basis. We will also update our websites as we hear more information. Be sure to make plans for how your child will get to and from school each day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

When dropping off your students to school, pull up quickly and drop off your students. Do not park your car in front of the school in our loading/unloading zone. This is an existing school policy, but it will also be very important during the bus drivers’ strike as more students will be arriving and leaving school each day by car. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please do not bring your dogs onto the playground. This is both a Seattle Public Schools policy and City of Seattle ordinance. As a reminder, signs are posted on all school property playgrounds. This year the building staff decided that the only grade level to switch classes at the semester break would be the 5th grade classes. This was announced by Principal Goldberg earlier in the school year.

This week we had a fire drill, which was officially observed by the Seattle Fire Department. We were able to completely evacuate the building within three minutes. The Fire Department reported to us that this was one of the best fire drill school evacuations they had observed. We have an active Safety Committee that conducts school emergency drills throughout the school year which include fire, earthquake, shelter in place and lock down. You can be very proud of our students for quickly and quietly following all our safety procedures. They knew exactly what to do.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
