Last Newsletter for the Year - June 23, 2017

Dear McDonald International Student and Families,

Thank you for a fantastic year! On behalf of the entire staff, it is has been a pleasure working with your children this year. As this school year comes to an end, we wish our 5th graders and their families a wonderful transition to middle school. Additionally, we say good-bye to our wonderful staff members and interns who will not be returning this coming fall (Profe Gabriela, Yayoi Sensei, Nurse Alison, Emi Sensei, Ms. Roosma, Maestra Dana, Natalia, Jorge, Diana, Daijiro, Julian, Masako). And, we say “thank you” to our long term subs Ms. Karen, Ms. Rowe, and Ms. Simon.

This summer, please encourage your children to read in both English and Japanese or Spanish. Additionally, if you are traveling, please send us a post card or photo with a couple of sentences about your adventure. The plan is to fill one of our bulletin boards with a collection of summer memories for students to see when they return in September.

Lastly, as you all know, Ms. Roosma will be leaving McDonald International. She will be returning to a full time Assistant Principal position at Olympic View. We are very excited for Ms. Roosma. Below is a farewell letter she has written to the community.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Michelle Goldberg

To the McDonald International Community,

As this year draws to a close and I brainstorm what to write in a letter that says ‘farewell’, I find myself getting emotional with the thought of saying goodbye.  This past year I was welcomed into McDonald International with open arms. So many people came to me to share their excitement and to introduce themselves that immediately I felt at home.  Not a day goes by that I haven’t felt at home at McDonald.

Early in my teaching career one of my mentor teachers and I were talking about my class and I was super discouraged…I felt like I hadn’t made a difference in my class all year.  The piece of wisdom she shared with me was, “sometimes you don’t know or realize the impact you made until years down the road.” What does this story have to do with McDonald? Well, just the other day I had a conversation with a mom who spoke such wonderful things about this year and the work that has been done that I got teary eyed.  Sometimes we just do not realize the impact that we make in each others lives.

Although I haven’t had the chance to have one on one conversations with all of our kiddo’s…the ones I have had have been super rich. McDonald is full of wonderful students who’s desire to learn and master new things has been incredible to watch and be a part of.  I am so thankful for my time here.  As children continue to approach me and ask me to say, I honestly can’t tell you how difficult this decision was for me to make. The day I made the decision I was crying in Michelle’s office because of how tough the decision was.

Thank you to all of you whom I have met, and even those whom I haven’t met, for allowing me to get to know your children over the past year. This has been an amazing year and I will truly miss everyone!

Until next time,
Rachel Roosma
