Spring Has Sprung - March 31, 2017

Dear McDonald International Students and Families,

The last couple of weeks at McDonald were filled with singing, dancing, and drumming. We have had the pleasure of having our Artist-in-Residence, Sumayya Diop work with our students on African dancing and drumming. Through dancing and drumming, she has taught the students about the importance of working together, supporting one another and being brave. The first week she worked with our 2nd and 3rd graders, this week she worked with our Kindergartens and 1st graders, and she will conclude her time with us next week, when she works with our 4th and 5th graders. I hope your child(ren) have shared their experiences with you and if they haven’t, be sure to ask them about it.

This afternoon the Japanese Immersion students had the opportunity to listen to Echo Chorus. Echo Chorus is a Japanese Women’s Chorus Group, founded in 1990 by four Japanese women who moved from Japan to live in Washington State. Their music was beautiful and having them sing at our school was a real treat.

For the month of April, the Core Value we will focus on is honesty. At McDonald International we define honesty as, “We are truthful members of our community.” During the morning announcements, our 5th graders will share messages about this core value.

McDonald International is the recipient of a grant from the Seattle Department of Transportation. The grant entitles us to two community crosswalks (one on N 54th Street and one on N 55th Street). In order to get our students involved in this project, we have decided to hold a competition to design the crosswalks. The top two designs selected will be installed next school year. Students may submit 1 design and they must use the official Crosswalk Design Competition Form for their submission. Students will receive this form next week and will have until April 28 to submit their design. Students may use a maximum of three colors on their design (including white). After the April 28 deadline, I will select the 10 best drawings and then the students will vote for their favorite. The 2 drawings with the most votes will be submitted to the department of transportation and those designs will be installed. We are very excited about this project.

I hope you have a great weekend and as always, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me or schedule a time to meet in person.

Sincerely,
Michelle Goldberg
