Assessment Scores & More

Hello! Can you believe November is just around the corner? It seems like just yesterday we were beginning the new school year. Over the last 2 weeks we have been very busy at McDonald International.

This week our 5th grade students went to Islandwood for their overnight camp. I was fortunate to be able to join them on Wednesday and tag along with the "stream" group as we learned about "soil to food" and made homemade bread and tea using herbs from the garden. We also sampled store bought honey and honey made from the local bees at Islandwood. Unanimously, we agreed that Islandwood honey was much tastier than store bought honey.

The last 2 weeks, students in grades 3-5 have been taking their STAMP assessment. This assessment is used to determine language proficiency in Spanish and Japanese. Results from this assessment will be shared during parent teacher conferences.

Speaking of assessments, I am proud to share the assessment scores from our 2015-2016 Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA). The SBA is a state assessment that is given to our 3rd through 5th graders in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Our students did really well and outperformed most of the schools in SPS and the state. During conference you will receive your individual child’s test scores. Last year’s results were as follows:

3rd Grade Level
94% pass rate in Math | 90% pass rate in ELA

4th Grade Level
92% pass rate in Math | 89% pass rate in ELA

5th Grade Level
79% pass rate in Math | 88% pass rate in ELA

*Note- on the OSPI website the scores are slightly lower due to the fact that any student who opted out of the assessment is considered to have a failed. The data above is reflective only of those students who actually took the assessment.

Has your child mentioned having lunch in my office? Over the past few weeks I have been having lunch dates with 4-6 students at a time. If your child hasn’t had their chance yet, please tell them not to worry! Every student will have a chance to eat with me before the year is over.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let your child’s teacher or me know. Have a great weekend!

Michelle Goldberg
