Mayra Castanos Burgueno, 1st Grade Spanish Immersion

I‘m from Mexico and grew up in Guadalajara, Jal., the second largest city in my country.  I’ve been living in U.S.A since 2001, always in Seattle. Since I was very young I thought I will become a teacher someday, but I ended up doing a B.A. in Communications.

Life brought me back to my original plan in 2006 when I had the opportunity to work with preschoolers in a Head Start program as an assistant teacher. I worked with a wonderful diverse population. Afterwards, I worked in a family resource center in Wallingford for about four years leading playgroups in Spanish and English for families and their children 0-5 years old. I would also assist low income families and immigrant families as well. This job helped me to realize how much enjoyment I find working with children and families.

I started to work in McDonald in 2011 as an Instructional Assistant. I’m proud to say that I’ve seen this school grow and is a privilege to be a witness of such great commitment, professionalism and kindness coming from staff, students and their families. As an immigrant, I feel proud and happy to share my language and my culture with this community  and  I feel very honored to work with first graders. Every year I get to earn more knowledge, enjoyment and compassion while working with them. That is priceless.

I love visiting my nuclear family in Mexico every year and enjoy music, my job and spending time with my family here in Seattle.

Hasta pronto!
