Jim Grunewald, ELL Teacher

I’m pleased to join the McDonald International community as ELL teacher! Helping our students become fully bilingual world citizens is a goal I believe in wholeheartedly!

My high school Spanish teacher gave me a priceless gift. Her teaching and enthusiasm sparked my own passion for languages, my international outlook, my keen interest in Latin American music, culture and history, and my desire to teach. At age 15 I spent 6 weeks living in Mexico City. After high school, I studied in Mexico and later, Germany. While in Germany I played Andean music with a Bolivian folk group. I have lived in Mexico for months at a time, in Mexico City, Cholula, Cuernavaca, and Guadalajara. I spent 8 months studying guitar and music in Santiago, Chile, and have traveled in Spain, Bolivia, Peru, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. While teaching Spanish at Alki Elementary, I established a video pen-pal project with Nicaraguan school on the Island of Ometepe.

I began my teaching career as a student teacher at an international school in Guadalajara, Mexico. I have taught English Language Learners at over 10 Seattle schools. I enjoy working with students and families from many different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It is exciting to watch my students’ abilities to express themselves blossom in English and their home languages!

Outside of school, I enjoy singing, listening to and playing music, camping, hiking and cycling.
