klblack@seattleschools.org

Kelli Black has a master’s degree in education and teaching certificate from Antioch University. She has an elementary endorsement and did her student teaching at Coe Elementary in Seattle. Senorita Kelli taught for three years in Japan as an ESL teacher, and has had experience as a long-term substitute teacher in Seattle Public Schools and Northshore Public Schools.

Many of you got to know Senorita Kelli in the 2013-14 year when she was a long-term substitute teacher in our building. Senorita Kelli did a wonderful job last year creating a warm and positive environment for student learning and has shown herself to be a thoughtful and collaborative colleague. She has been a member of the K-1 math Professional Learning Community (PLC) in our school and a member of the Safety Committee.

More from Senorita Kelli in her own words:

"I moved to Madrid, Spain when I was 8 and lived there for 10 years. I didn't speak any Spanish when I arrived so my parents enrolled me in a private British international school. I made friends from all over the world. I studied Spanish grammar at school but learned to speak the language playing with friends in my community. It was immersion at its best! I also studied French and Latin. I discovered that I really enjoyed learning new languages and meeting people from around the world.

I returned to the northwest, where I'm originally from, to go to the University of Washington. After 2 years in Seattle, I decided I wanted to be an architect and transferred to the University of Oregon, where I graduated with a BA in Interior Architecture. I practiced design at a multi-disciplined architectural firm in Portland, Oregon for 5 years.

In 1996 I moved to Japan to teach ESL to students ranging from 5-85. I lived in Okayama and Fukuoka for 3 years. It was an amazing experience! I traveled extensively during my vacation breaks to Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, and Europe. Living in Japan is where I realized how much I loved teaching.

In 1999 I returned to Seattle and started a family. I have 2 children, a boy (16) and a girl (12). I live in Wallingford and in my free-time I like to garden, read, hike, cook, spend time with my children, watch movies, and TRAVEL!!!"
