May is Bike To School Month!

Time to get rolling. We have some exciting events planned for two wheels in May!

  • Tuesday, May 8th is the McDonald School Bike Rodeo: Come to the playground from 5:30-6:30pm to practice bike safety and road biking skills. Optional bonus bike jumps and balance beam fun! We will need a few parents to man rodeo stations. Sign up here
  • Wednesday, May 9th is Bike to School Day: Ride your bike to school and earn fun prizes!
  • Monday, May 14th we will have a Bike Maintenance workshop: Learn how to fix a bike flat or do simple brake fine-tuning. If there are any other parents out there with knowledge of bike mechanics we would love your help! Meet at the playground at 6pm and bring your bikes.
  • Sunday, May 20th is Scotties at Duthie Day: For bikers big and small, Duthie Hill Mountain Bike Park is great fun! There is a central clearing with pump tracks for the very young and a variety of easy and hard loop trails to accommodate every skill level. Meet at the new Duthie Hill parking lot (26150 SE Issaquah-Fall City Rd) at 2pmto ride together to the clearing. More information and directions can be found on the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance website.
  • Monday, May 21nd is Bike to Ice Cream Day: We will be leaving from the front school entrance at 2:35pm for a bike train to Zoe Yogurt on 4th and Ravenna on Green Lake. Optional ride around Green Lake or we can play on the Green Lake playground after the treats. Yum!
  • Thursday, May 31st is Scotties around Green Lake: Meet at the Green Lake Community Center playground at 6pm. We will bike around the lake and then join us for an optional pizza dinner at Zeeks Pizza (BYOP).

Don’t forget to fill out your Bike To School Calendar coming home in kid mail (extra copies available at the office) to earn cool prizes and the Golden Pedal Award for McDonald Intl School! Biking in groups, called “bike trains” is safer. Write dates in the boxes on the calendar for an extra prize if you rode in a group of 3 or more friends to school or back home. For more information on bike trains, see Cascade Bicycle Club’s website.

Please note: You can ride your bike at any time, anywhere for your calendar minutes.

Please turn your calendar in to your teacher or the office by Wednesday, June 6nd to qualify for prizes.
